The Iraq War Revisited And Revised

Why has the Daily Star of Bangladesh run a series of articles recently on the Iraq War, claiming it was war for oil?

The real story behind the war was, of course, that George Bush acted at the behest of Christian fundamentalists. Four million Christian evangelicals refused to vote for him the first time. They believe that Jesus Christ will reappear in Israel, and convert the Jews to Christianity. Presumably it will be the end of the world.

The United States had imposed sanctions on Iraq, killing 1.7 million Iraqi children (see The Economist). This fact is nowhere mentioned, let alone emphasized. And this holocaust took place on Bill Clinton's watch.

Now, the Daily Star is run by Mahfuz Anam, whose wife Shaheen Anam is head of the mega-NGO, Mausher Jonno. This organisation hands out western aid to lesser NGOs. So this husband-wife pair is in cahoots with western governments. And Bangladesh is a Muslim country.

The media, western governments and intellectuals would have us believe that the only fundamentalist problem is Muslim fundamentalism. There is - and can be - no sch thing as Christian fundamentalism, though the word derives from the Bible belt.

Saddam Hussein was a threat to Israel, so he had to be removed. This was Christian machination. Indeed, Christian fundamentalists are advisors to American presidents. And the fact that both Clinton and Bush were against Iraq testifies to the bipartisan reality of the influence of Christian fundamentalists.

Hence the Daily Star's attempt to 'prove' that the war was for oil - to conceal the Christian fundamentalists' influence on US politics. This would also discredit the world's oldest democracy as a sinister force.

The Daily Star of Bangladesh claims that the Iraq war was a war by the state, and not by civil society,  a favorite watchword of NGOs.  As the husband of Shaheen Anam, director of the mega-NGO Manusher Jonno, the editor has a vested interest in whitewashing civil society.
